It all started with a question.
What are the biggest climate killers? We quickly identified agriculture as one of the biggest drivers of CO2 emissions. So the next question was: what can we do about it? When insects were approved as animal feed in the EU in 2017, it was clear to us that this was our opportunity to make a difference. We, Wolfgang and Thomas, had both already founded successful companies and knew that the climate crisis needed quick solutions. That's why we left our former companies and founded FarmInsect.
Our idea
FarmInsect brings insect breeding directly to your own farm. Using fully automated, modular systems, farmers can breed protein-rich black soldier fly larvae in existing buildings. Fed with the farm's own waste materials such as old bread, vegetable waste, whey or spent grains, they produce high-quality feed - suitable for pigs, poultry, fish and pets.
The larvae are antibiotic-free, well tolerated and offer a regional, sustainable alternative to imported soya or fishmeal.
What used to be disposed of is now a valuable part of a cycle. FarmInsect not only provides the right technology for this, but also the necessary expertise. This not only makes your own farm more economical and independent, but also actively contributes to climate protection.
Core idea
Optimization of the
circular economy
Independence from
protein imports
Creation of a regional,
sustainable protein source

New in spring: FarmInsect brings fresh impetus to insect breeding
Munich, April 2025
The arrival of spring brings three innovations to FarmInsect. The company is presenting new offers to make farms more efficient and utilization more predictable.
New to the portfolio are buy-back contracts for organic residues from larvae breeding. At the same time, a test phase for 5-year purchase agreements with fixed prices is being launched. They offer agricultural businesses stable framework conditions and protect against market fluctuations. Additional tailwind is provided by further technical development: in addition to the proven standard solution, fully automated systems in sizes L and XL are now also available. This allows production to be scaled flexibly. This is ideal for companies that want to grow and at the same time reduce time and workload.
Insects as soil improvers: FarmInsect fertilizer brings life to the desert
Dubai, April 2025
What has long since proven its worth in animal nutrition is now also unfolding its full potential in international agriculture: in Dubai, a nutrient-rich soil conditioner based on the black soldier fly is being successfully used as a natural fertilizer. The aim is to make barren desert soils fertile again - with measurable success. Thanks to ReSoil, not only the Ghaf tree, the national tree of the United Arab Emirates, but also crops such as tomatoes, carrots, kale and mulberries are now thriving in the arid region. This is an impressive example of how insects can become part of sustainable agriculture, even under extreme climatic conditions. FarmInsect founder Thomas Kuehn was personally on site and was able to see the impressive results for himself. The success of the fertilizer lies in the interplay of several factors: the nutrient ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is optimally balanced, the nutrients are released slowly and evenly, and the high water storage capacity supports plant growth, especially in dry regions. In addition, the natural chitin content strengthens plant health - without any hygienic risks for the soil.
